Vilnius / November 2025
A new cultural and travel project “Local Legends”, born in Lithuania, brings together art, history, and digital technology. What began as a series of artistic works about the Legends of Vilnius has grown into an international movement — aiming to revive legendary places around the world through painting, storytelling, and travel experiences available on the Legego.com platform.
From Vilnius Legends to a Global Network
The project began with “Vilnius Legends”, a series of paintings by artist Jurga Budrytė. Each artwork reimagines a city legend — from Gediminas’ dream and the origins of Verkiai to the city’s defensive bastion and mysterious underground tunnels.
This series evolved into an interactive art tour on Legego.com, where each artwork is linked to a real location — visitors can explore it, listen to the story, view the artistic interpretation, or even purchase reproductions.
“We wanted to show that legends are not relics of the past — they live in the places around us, if only we learn to see them differently,” says Jurga Budrytė, co-author of the project and co-founder of the 1001Legenda.lt art studio.
A Global Mission: Rediscovering Legendary Places
Following the success of Vilnius Legends, Jurga and the Legego.com team set a broader goal — to unite artists from around the world to revive legendary places through art and travel storytelling.
At the heart of “Local Legends” is the idea of creating an international artistic atlas of legendary places. Each destination is brought to life through the canvases of local artists and transformed into an interactive travel experience on Legego.com.
“Each piece of art is not only a creation — it’s an invitation to travel, to explore cities, cultures, and people through their stories. We want these stories not only to be preserved but to evolve, connecting creators and travelers worldwide,” says Živilė Šimkienė, founder of Legego.com.
When Art Becomes a Journey
Legego.com is an innovative platform empowering artists, guides, and travelers to create and share their own authentic experiences.
Users can explore virtual tours, purchase art-inspired travel stories, and engage with unique narratives that merge personal experiences, myths, and creative expression.
The 1001 Legends initiative acts as a global artists’ network:
- Artists discover legendary places in their own countries;
- Legego.com helps transform them into digital tours;
- Travelers experience art in real life through curated routes.
In this way, art becomes a living travel experience, and travel becomes a new form of art.
First Steps Beyond Lithuania
After the Vilnius Legends project, the team plans to expand into new countries, inviting artists to rediscover the legends of their own regions.
One upcoming direction focuses on basketball — Lithuania’s modern mythology. The series “Following the Paths of Basketball Gods” bridges art and sport, paying tribute to Lithuanian basketball legends whose journeys connect to NBA cities.
This theme aims to unite the Lithuanian diaspora in the U.S., contemporary artists, and international cultural foundations.
Art Connecting History, Place, and People
The project stands out by merging three dimensions — physical art (painting), local history, and digital travel experiences. This approach makes art accessible not only in galleries but also online and through real-world journeys.
“Every city has its secret, its legend. We want artists to become the voices of those places — and travelers to become their listeners,” says Jurga Budrytė.
The title “1001 Legends” symbolizes an endless chain of stories — from ancient myths and heritage tales to modern urban narratives. Each is a small fragment of cultural memory, rediscovered through the lens of art and travel.
