RIGA - 35 years ago we were able to unite for a common goal - a free, independent Latvia - and I am convinced that we are able to do it today, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkevics said in his congratulatory message on the anniversary of the restoration of Latvia's Independence.

The president points out that on May 4, 1990, with purple and white lilac bouquets in their hands, proud and hopeful people greeted deputies at the Supreme Council building in the Old Town, whose overwhelming majority had voted for the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Latvia.

He says that at that time behind the Supreme Council stood Latvian patriots who had shown that they wanted to decide and do things for themselves, wanted to speak Latvian and nurture their culture, wanted to see the truth and not five-year plans. The president of Latvia emphasizes that these patriots wanted to build Latvia, not to stagnate in a decaying empire. Rinkevics thanks everyone who has protected, shaped and truly loved Latvia over 35 years.

"35 years ago we were able to unite for a common goal. A goal that is more important than everyday disagreements. A free, independent Latvia. I am convinced that today we are capable of doing this today as well," the president said.

In his greetings, he calls for celebration of the restoration of independence, stressing that it is as important to celebrate and rejoice as it is to protect. The president encourages people to meet their loved ones, to congratulate neighbors they have never spoken to and to rejoice with strangers. He believes that if we have one goal, "we are not strangers, we are all one of us, we are Latvia".

Today is the 35th anniversary of the proclamation of the restoration of independence of the Republic of Latvia.
