TALLINN – The Tallinn city council adopted the Tallinn waste plan for the period 2022-2026, with the main objectives of expanding separate collection of bio-waste, promoting the collection and treatment of textile waste, transforming waste stations into recycling centers and promoting reuse.
The main change envisaged in the waste plan will be to make separate collection of bio-waste compulsory for all properties from spring next year, the city's communication service said.
From the beginning of the 2022 school year until June 14, 2024, an environmental education program titled "Prevention and reduction of waste generation, reuse and recycling, and forming the habit of separate collection" will be carried out in all kindergartens and schools in Tallinn to raise children's awareness of waste sorting. The program will involve 125 kindergartens and 55 schools in Tallinn, with a total of 1,290 lessons taking place in educational institutions.
For the first time this year, a quarterly bulk waste collection campaign was held, where every resident of Tallinn could take up to three cubic meters of bulk waste to Tallinn waste collection stations free of charge during the campaign week. In total, 5,239.67 cubic meters of large waste was collected. The city is planning to organize the campaign weeks again next year.
