Lithuanian strongman Zydrunas Savickas, 31, took top prize in the 6th Annual Arnold Strongman Classic held in Colombus, Ohio on March 3. It was his fifth consecutive victory in the contest. Winning four events out of six, Savickas earned 52 points, a $30,000 check and congratulations from California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, after whom the event is named. Second place went to Vasily Virastiuk of Ukraine (48 points), and Estonia's Andrus Murumets, who replaced injured Benedikt Magnusson from Iceland, placed third with 38.5 points, earning a $15,000 prize.
David Beckham limped off with a knee injury during the second half of Real Madrid's 1-1 draw against Getafe on March 4. Beckham hurt his right knee after miscuing a cross and running into advertising boards behind the goal. Jose Antonio Reyes, on loan from Arsenal, also injured his knee, causing both to miss the following Wednesday's Champions League game at Bayern Munich.
The European Indoor Athletics Championships in Birmingham drew to a close on March 4 after three days of thrilling action at the National Indoor Arena, enjoyed by a combined total of 18,000 spectators. A flurry of medals on the final day saw Britain top the final medals table 's winning three gold, four silver and three bronze to finish ahead of Italy and Sweden. The Russians finished fourth overall, but did claim the most medals, winning 15 in total. The baton will now be handed over to Turin, who will host the Championships in 2009.
