There have been a spate of sightings of wild boars in Riga recently, but last night was perhaps the most surprising, as two were caught on video surveillance "visiting" the Freedom Monument in the heart of the Latvian capital. This happened at around 5:30 a.m., and police called in veteranarians to remove the animals, one of which had to be neutralised with a stun gun. The two "thrill seekers" were transported to a wooded area outside the city

In March, footage was taken of 12 wild boars grazing on a tramline in the Riga suburb of Jugla at night. The mayor of Riga, Nils Usakov said in response that the presence of wild boars demonstrated that the ecological situation in the city was what it should be, reported Delfi.

There have been estimated to be around 30,000 wild boars living wild in Latvia.
