Rigans very actively apply for free Latvian language classes organized by Riga City Council

RIGA - Rigans have been applying very actively for the free Latvian language classes to be organized by the Riga City Council.

The city council's Education, Culture and Sports Department said that eight projects for Latvian language classes to more than 1,200 non-Latvians living in Riga would be carried out this year. The total cost of the projects is EUR 128,179.

The classes for as many as 51 groups will begin in spring. Applications could be submitted, starting January 9, and in two days each of those groups had a full set of potential students while few vacancies still remain in the groups which will begin the classes in fall.

The Latvian language classes organized by the Riga City Council have been very popular among non-Latvian residents of Riga since they were first offered in 2011. The Latvian language course was completed by 507 Rigans in 2011, 2,569 in 2012, 1,391 in 2013, 1,232 in 2014, 1,166 in 2015 and 1,223 in 2016.
