Dissolution vote to be held Aug. 2

RIGA - More than half of the eligible voters in Latvia plan to participate in the referendum on August 2 to vote on constitutional amendments that will allow people to initiate dissolution of the parliament.

As many as 35.3 percent of respondents polled by Latvian newspaper Diena will definitely participate in the popular vote, while 26.6 percent said they are likely to go to the referendum.

As many as 17.6 percent of the polled people said they will not participate in the vote and 14 percent said they will rather stay at home than go to the referendum.

As many as 6.4 percent of the people have not yet decided whether or not to participate in the popular vote.

The most active group of voters is elderly people -- as many as 54 percent of voters aged 65-74 will certainly go to the referendum, and 16.8 percent are likely to participate.

As many as 33.3 percent of Latvian voters plan to participate in the referendum, and another 30.5 percent are likely to participate.

The survey also shows that 40 percent of minority representatives will definitely go to the referendum and 17 percent of them are likely to go.
