Hundreds of drunk drivers arrested over holidays RIGA- Local Latvian police pulled over a total of 644 drunk drivers this holiday weekend. According to LETA news agency, about half 315 drivers were not over the legal limit.The June 20-23 time period is notorious for record amounts of accidents and drunk driving incidents. This year the total for traffic accidents was 382 in all of Latvia, although only 17 were a result of drunk drivers. About 50 additional drivers were pulled over on charges of narcotic usage. Despite the high number of drivers under the influence, there were 7 deaths and 96 injuries reported total over the weekend. However not all accidents and recklessness involved a motor vehicle as 268 people were fined for jaywalking around the region as well. Every year the on-duty police increase in numbers during the holidays with this year being a total of 2114 police being out in force. A total of 32,415 were pulled over and checked. |
