Born on December 10, 1944 in a small town Nītaure in Latvian SSR. In 1971 graduated as a radio engineer from Riga Polytechnical Institute. In 1988 graduated the Economic Faculty of the Latvian State University. Berzins started his working career as a radio engeneer at "Elektrons" factory, becoming the factory director.
1988 he is appoined a Deputy Minister of municipal services of the Latvian SSR;
1989 - elected to the Valmiera district Council of People's Deputies;
1990 - elected to the Supreme Council of the Latvian SSR. The same year joined the Latvian Popular Front faction in the Supreme Council.
1993 - becomes a chairman of the Privatization Fund of the Bank of Latvia, also becomes a president of Latvijas Unibanka JSC.
Andris Berzins returned to political career in 2005 when taking part in the elections of Mayor of Riga as the leader of The Union of Greens and Farmers. In 2006-2010 served a chairman of Latvian Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
2010 - elected as a deputy of the Saeima (Parliament of Latvia).
2011 - took office of the President of Latvia.
