Alfreds Rubiks was born on September 24, 1935 in Daugavpils. A former leader of the Comunist Party of Latvia.
1984-1990 - Chairman of the Executive Commitee of the Riga City Soviet, the last Communist mayor of the city;
1990-1991 - member of Politburo of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Opposed Latvia's independence from the Soviet Union.
1995-1997 - was imprisoned for the attempt to overthrow the new government;
1996 - took part in presidentian elections in Latvia;
1999 - became a chairman of the Socialist Party of Latvia;
2009 - member of the European Partliament.
