Officials consider solutions for opera crisis

RIGA - A meeting earlier this month between government officials and the director of the Latvian National Opera did not lead to any concrete solutions to the opera's financial woes.However, officials did discuss turning the opera, currently state-owned and 1.9 million lats ($3.28 million) in debt, into a joint-stock company shared by the state and the Riga City Council, a move that would mean bigger subsidies for the opera, said Culture Minister Karina Petersone.Making such a move would require ...
