Estonia's fund aided 866 migrants in 1999

Jan 13, 2000

TALLINN(BNS) - The migration fund with the Estonian citizenship and
migration board last year provided 7.9 million kroons ($0.52 million)
in assistance to 866 recipients who either came to live in Estonia or
moved out of the country.

Receiving the support in 1999 were 498 people who moved out and 368
who came to live here, a spokesperson for the migration authority
said. Most of the people moving into Estonia were ethnic Estonians
who formerly had their homes in Latvia, Lithuania or countries of the
CIS. Most of those moving out went to Russia.

Of the 7.9 million kroons spent for migration assistance during 1999,
3.8 million kroons came from the state budget, and the rest was
received in donations mostly from Finland and Sweden.
