A senior Latvian MP has been forced to resign from her position today after saying it was good Nazi's shot gays.

Inga Priede, a member of Latvia's ruling Unity party, landed in hot water after the comments on Twitter last night.

“Thank God! The Germans shot them in their time. Was good for demographics,” Priede wrote on Twitter, leading to an outpouring of criticism from fellow party leaders and others.

The comments come after Latvia's foreign minister Edgars Rinkevics announced he was gay on Twitter last month. The revelation was followed up by a similar announcement by he UK's charge d'affaires in Riga, Iain Frew.

Latvia doesn't officially recognize same sex partnerships.

Following the comments, Priede apologizes to those who misinterpreted her statements and stepped down as a member of Unity's board. The politician said she did not want to offend anyone.

Unity party leader Solvita Aboltina stressed that Priede's statements were 'unacceptable' and did not reflect the the part's view.

Several Unity members urged the party's board to review this issue during its next meeting, including the party's Secretary General Artis Kampars. The party's board has not yet scheduled an extraordinary meeting this week.
