A musical based on the life of Nazi soldier Herbert Cukurs, accused of murdering tens of thousands of Jews during the Holocaust has premiered in Latvia.

The play is dividing opinions, fast. Cukurs, nicknamed 'The Bucher of Riga' is widely accused of murdering tens of thousands of Jews during the Holocaust in World War Two.

Latvia's Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics said the performance would be interrupted in the event of 'provocation' Russia condemned the musical and called on other world leaders to do the same, the ITAR TASS news agency reports.

The concert notes however say the play tells the story of the "legendary flight, adventures and tragic fate of the Liepaja aviator."

Around 300 people attended the opening of the musical on October 11 in Liepaja, LSM's English language reports.

Cukurs is a controversial figure. He is well know as a pioneer in the aviation field after he completed a number of long distance flights including Riga to Tokyo.

Cukurs, who never stood trial for his crimes, later fled to Brazil during Soviet rule before being assassinated by Israeli Mossad agents in 1965.
