A Swiss company has won a bid to lease new electric trains worth several million euros to Latvia.

The new trains would guarantee safe and economical transportation for passengers, Pasazieru vilciens board chairman Artis Birkmanis said.

He added that train travel in the future would become the ''most modern, fastest and affordable mode of transport for Latvian residents.''

Up to 45 new trains will be bought as part of the plans costing around 153 million euros.

The tender was won by Swiss based Stadler Bussnang AG after three bids were previously submitted. Others bids submitted by the Polish company Pesa, Germany's Stadler and South Korea's Hyundai.

The new trains will hit the tracks within eighteen up to 28 months, the company has said.
