There are a couple of issues which get the undies of Latvian nationalists all knotted up, and one of them is referenced in the headline to this commentary. Back when the Soviet Union was collapsing (and please let’s remember that for Latvia’s purposes, it collapsed pretty much overnight – one clumsy and failed coup and bang, you’re an independent country now!), the authorities struggled mightily to cover up the dirty deeds in which they had been engaging for the past half-century.
