Freezing weather claims 58 lives in Latvia

A total of 58 people have died in Latvia from exposure to cold so far this winter.

Freezing cold weather conditions have claimed the lives of 43 men and 15 women since September 1, 2013. The Riga region recorded 28 deaths, 16  in Latgale, six in Vidzeme, five in Zemgale, three in Kurzeme.

Up to 27 persons froze to death on streets, 11 froze to death in forests.

A total of 17 persons were under the influence of alcohol when they froze to death.
