Over 14,000 people braved the bitter cold Saturday, Jan. 18 to be a part of the human chain from downtown Riga to Pardaugava transferring books from the old National Library to the new.

Organizers are reporting that the event, called the "Friends of Books Chain", was festive but painstakingly slow. The first book (The Bible) went out at about 12 noon and by 4.30 p.m. 2,000 books had been transferred. Organizers had thought much more would be transferred, but emphasize that quantity is unimportant in the symbolic undertaking.

This was one of the main events in the opening weekend for Riga's honorary title of European Capital of Culture 2014.
