Archbishop Tamkevicius receives Freedom Prize

On Monday, Jan. 13, Lithuanian archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church Sigitas Juozas Tamkevicius was presented with the Lithuania Freedom Prize award, reports ELTA. It was the third time when the Lithuania Freedom Prize award was presented.

The Lithuania Freedom Prize award was presented to a fighter for Lithuania's Freedom and human rights, an active participant in the non-armed resistance, a political prisoner, founder of the occasional press publication Lithuanian Catholic Church Chronicle and member of the Believers' Rights Defense Committee Sigitas Tamkevicius.

The aim of the Lithuanian Freedom Prize, established by the Seimas, is to acknowledge the achievements and contribution of persons and organizations to the protection of human rights, democratic development, and fostering of international cooperation for the cause of sovereignty and the right to self-determination of Eastern and Central European nations. The Law on the Freedom Prize was adopted by the Seimas on Sept. 15, 2011.
