Fans of British detective, Sherlock Holmes, have paid tribute to his 160th birthday by dressing up and marching in Riga, Latvia. (see photos here)

On Jan. 4, fans dressed up as characters from the detective story and held a costume party. There was also a competition for the best dressed character.

In 1979, Riga was selected as a filming ground for “Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson” series.

The series was hugely popular in the Soviet Union, starring Vasily Livanov (MBE) as Sherlock Holmes.

Over 1000 people from 10 different countries have attended the event over the years. It's the third such celebration in Riga.
