Up to one million euros (790,000 lats) have been raised for the victims of the Latvian supermarket tragedy, reports LETA.

The money will cover funeral expenses, psychological counseling and hospital and doctors bills, the ziedot.lv charity said who set up the fund.

At least 54 people died and dozens were injured after the Maxima supermarket collapsed on Thursday, Nov. 21. It's the biggest loss of life in a single incident since Latvia gained its independence in 1991.

The tragedy has led to the resignation of Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis and the head of Maxima Latvija Gintaras Jasinskas.

A police investigation is currently ongoing in to the causes of the collapse whilst an independent board of engineers are scanning the property for any further clues.

It was revealed this week that faulty calculations and violations of construction norms contributed to the collapse of the supermarket.

A 140 million euro lawsuit has also been filed against Maxima Latvia and construction company, Re&Re including other companies involved in the supermarkets dealings.
