Estonian photographers won several high level awards in the European Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2013 contest, including victories in two categories, reports Public Broadcasting. The results of the contest were announced last weekend at a festival in Lunen, Germany.

The category of mammals was won by Estonian photographer Sven Zacek’s photo of roe deer while Mati Kose’s photo of bats in the night sky achieved second place. Zacek’s aerial photo of elk in winter received a ‘highly commended’ mark by the jury.

The victory in the ‘other animals’ category went to Remo Savisaar’s photo of a rhinoceros beetle.

This is the most successful performance of Estonian nature photographers ever at an international high-level photography competition, testifying to the strong level of Estonian nature photography, but also increasing international interest towards Estonian nature, said Public Broadcasting.

The European Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition is organized by the German nature photography association GDT.
