Riga has been officially unveiled as the European Capital Culture 2014 in Brussels with a special arts exhibition. The Art Noveau Riga exhibition launched in the Belgian capital on Oct. 15 runs for three days showcasing the best the city has to offer.

European Parliament deputy Inese Vaidere said: “Latvia is a unique country – the Latvian people have managed to retain their independence throughout centuries of hard times. With Riga becoming Europe’s cultural capital in 2014, I would like to show my European colleagues all the things we are proud of in Riga – Latvian national songs, Riga’s Art Nouveau architecture and the best possible food products our home companies have to offer.

“We are an extraordinary people – the kind that has strong ties, strong traditions, language and our own country. We have much to feel proud of. I am certain we will pleasantly surprise the European Parliament.”

The event was backed by the European Parliament and the Latvian embassy in Belgium.
