Not just an unfortunate incident

The last few weeks have not been the best of times for Lithuania. The country’s Ministry of Justice gave the Belarusian authorities information on the bank accounts of almost 400 opposition organizations and individuals. On the basis of this information the authorities in Minsk arrested Ales Bialiatsky, a leading human rights activist, and charged him with tax evasion on a massive scale. Last week the Lithuanian Embassy in Minsk granted a visa to Alla Bodak, the deputy minister of justice, although she was on a list of Belarusian officials banned from entering the European Union.
