RIGA -- Latvia's national hockey team has hired Canadian Ted Nolan to become the country's new national coach.

Nolan has formerly coached the Buffalo Sabres and the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League, and won the NHL Coach of the Year Award in 1997.

The position became available after the team sacked former head coach Olegs Znaroks following a dissappointing 13th place finish in the last world championships.
