KLAIPEDA - It is likely that construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal on Kiaules Nugara Island in the Curonian Lagoon may be a temporary solution to the longer project of breaking Gazprom’s monopoly on gas supply to Lithuania, reports news agency ELTA. Afterwards, the terminal could be moved to some other place.
Kiaules Nugara Island has been chosen as the priority construction site of the LNG terminal, however, other possible sites in Butinge village or Melnrage in Klaipeda city are being considered as well.

On her visit to Klaipeda, President Dalia Grybauskaite stressed that all possible risks must be evaluated, environmental impact assessments carried out responsibly, people openly informed on the project and all strict construction and environmental requirements met when selecting a construction site for the project.

According to the head of state, the construction pace of one of the most important projects to our energy security is unreasonably slow. However, as she says, the situation is changing as Klaipeda City Municipality, the port and the company Klaipedos Nafta are starting to work hand-in-hand in order to complete the terminal as soon as possible.
In the president’s view, the LNG terminal, the NordBalt submarine power cable, the first in the Baltic States’ waste incineration and combined heat and power plant for biofuel, are not only alternatives to Russian gas, but also a possibility to cut heating and electricity prices.

Grybauskaite underlined that more competitive fuel prices could be achieved by boosting Klaipedos Nafta’s imports.
