Tens of thousands turn out for song festival

TALLINN -- Around 35,000 schoolchildren this weekend took part in the three-day Youth Song and Dance Celebration, a massive event attended by a staggering 8 percent of the national population.

The festival take splace once every two or three years. It is porimarily composed of folk dancing and choir performances of traditional Estonian songs.

Estonian song festivals, which date back to 1869, are the country's premier cultural event. They also played an important role in the country regaining independence in the early '90s, during what became known in the Baltics as the "Singing revolution".
