RIGA -- Popular Latvian composer and politician Imants Kalnins has published the first Latvian translation of the Koran.

Kalnins had been working on translating the Koran from Arabic for many years. The first Latvian-language version of the book was officially launched on May 31.

Kalnins, 70, is widely considered one of the most influencial musical composers in Latvian history, having written a number of symphonies, operas, classical music pieces, choral music, movie and theatre soundtracks, and pop rock songs. He was a member of parliament from 2002-2010.
