Lithuania celebrates national day

VILNIUS - Lithuania celebrates it's national day on Wednesday, marking 93 years since the Council of Lithuania signed the country's Act of Independence. 

"High happiness that we are free to celebrate our Independence day. Let the spirit of freedom be felt in every home on the 16th of February - and in each heart the love of homeland and its neighbour," Grybauskaite said in a press release.

"Let them be proud of their country, let us remember the 16th of February and out cherished values and think about what unites and strengthens us. Congratulations to all on February 16th. Let it come to our nation as a day of unity and celebration."

The day's main event will be a flag raising ceremony in St Daukantas square, followed by mass at Vilnius cathedral.

Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius also weighed in on the day, using the opportunity to again call for the country to achieve "independence of the gas sector".
