Latvia's first olympic champion dies aged 78

RIGA - Latvia's first Olympic champion and prominent public figure Inese Jaunzeme has passed away at the age of 78.

Jaunzeme won gold in the women's javelin throw at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956, becoming the first Latvian to win Olympic gold. She later served as president of the Latvian Olympians Club and was a leading figure in the restoration of the Latvian Olympic Committee.

Jaunzeme went on to enjoy a successful carreer as a doctor of medicine and a surgeon. She worked as a lecturer at the Latvian Academy of Medicine.
