Director: Robert Rodriguez

If you have ever seen any of Robert Rodriguez’s movies, you’ll probably know what to expect from the work of this director. Staying loyal to his style, Rodriguez gives us another serving of sex, drugs, gunfights and Latino music. His characters are powerful, violent, always on the run and, of course, comic and burlesque. His movies, which should in no way be taken seriously, are the assembly of every trash move that modern cinema has used, a parody on every cheap action movie ever made.

It is, of course, true that sometimes action on the screen happens to be so bloody, it becomes absurd, but, as surprising as it is, it is typical for Rodriguez to repel the viewer with some over-violent scenes in order to attract more attention. With the help of this great cast he manages to bring to life a hilarious farce – bloody, aggressive, and therefore very showy.
The cast, by the way, was almost flawless, with amazing performances by Robert De Niro, Michelle Rodriguez and, of course, the leading actor Danny Trejo. A surprisingly good performance by Steven Seagal made it even more pleasant. The amazing ability of Rodriguez to open a hidden comic side of an actor worked again.

Probably the main problem of all of Rodriguez’s movies in general (and this one especially) is that, from movie to movie, the style doesn’t change, the director does not evolve and therefore the latest movies look more and more similar to the previous ones. In the end it all starts to look like one big movie by Rodriguez. No complaints yet, as this is a good movie by Rodriguez, but eventually the viewer will get bored and it is hard to tell what will happen then since the director who doesn’t bring anything new to the screen is even worse than no director at all.

“Machete” is not a masterpiece, since it lacks the needed originality; it is just a very good work by a talented director, so you won’t waste your time watching it. Still, it can hardly be called a movie for the whole family, so you would probably like the kids to stay at home.

Now showing in all three countries.
