VENTSPILS - Embattled Ventspils Mayor Aivars Lembergs has announced he will not be taking part in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Lembergs, who has been charged with numerous serious criminal offences, said he will still accept his party's nomination for the post of Prime Minister.

''I have decided that I will not run in the parliamentary election in any of the elections districts. This was a hard decision for me, because political polls suggest I would have had much support," Lembergs told journalists.

"I believe my work in parliament would be less useful than remaining as the mayor of Ventspils," he said.
