RIGA - Latvian parliament has approved Eriks Kalnmeiers to take over as the country's prosecutor general. The country's new top lawyer began his duties immediately following the July 12 vote.

Kalnmeiers admitted that the job would not be an easy one, and that he would need a "strong backbone". He noted that the number of court aquittals has recently been on the rise.

In a secret ballot without debate, 54 were in favor of him, 25 were opposed, and 12 abstained.
