Finnish president faults residence permit rulings

Tarja Halonen, the Finnish president, on Friday spoke out against recent Supreme Administrative Court rulings on two elderly foreign women who have been refused residence permits.

The women, from Egypt and Russia, have family in Finland. The court has dismissed appeals against their removal from the country.

The president said the rulings were unreasonable and clashed with her own sense of justice.

She went on to urge Astrid Thors (spp), the immigration minister, to seek a political consensus in order to redress the situation.
