In this week’s edition, we publish an interview with Latvia’s President Valdis Zatlers (see page 14), in which he expresses an optimistic view of his country’s prospects in the medium to long term. We applaud the fact that a leader can look beyond the immediate doom and gloom of the economic crisis to see (and hopefully inspire) hope. However, we would like to take this opportunity to respectfully play devil’s advocate and suggest that things are not as cheerful as Zatlers’ makes out.
