President comemorates Lacplesis Day

Nov 11, 2009
Oskars Magone

RIGA - A number of events in the Latvian capital of Riga were held today in commemoration of Lacplesis Day, a national holiday honoring the country's soldiers.

President Valdis Zatlers spoke at a flower-laying ceremony at the Freedom Monument, one of the main events to take place during the day. Zatlers commented on the battle 90 years ago in which the country won its independence.

''During that time, and 20 years ago, Latvia fought for its independence. We were greatly outnumbered, however, we won, because we were convinced in our love for our fatherland, and unified to achieve our goals,'' the president said.
