RIGA - A deadly fire in the Latvian capital of Riga has claimed seven lives, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) reported Sunday.

The fire, which took place at 11:30pm on Saturday, destroyed the staircase and second floor of the building, located on Jekabpils Street.

Authorities said the fire was likely started by a drug addict on the abandon second floor of the building.

Eight people were reportedly saved from the flames - four adults and four children.
