Estonian Centre party wins the municipal elections

Edgar Savisaar - the current mayor of Tallinn

Themunicipal elections in Estonia, which took place on the 18 ofOctober, were won by The Centre Party, ledby the current Tallinn mayor Edgar Savisaar. The party was able togain 31,2% of the votes.

CentreParty's closest competitor - The Reform Party (which leader, AndrusAnsip, is currently the head of the Estonian government) - hasmanaged to gain only half as many votes (16,8%). Third place wastaken by ProPatria and Res Publica Union (IRL) with 14,1% of the votes. Thereformists and IRL are, right now, the ruling coalition in theEstonian parliament, and the Center fraction is oppositional.

Inthe capital the party of Edgar Savisaar was supported by the majority of the voters (53,3%). This secured them 44 seats of thetotal of 79 in the municipal assembly. The Centrist are alreadymaking plans of a coalition with the Social-Democratic party.

EdgarSavisaar himself, got 38 thousands 978 votes. It has been stated,that this result is record-breaking in the whole history of municipaland parliament elections in Estonia. In the comments about hisvictory, Savisaar mentioned, that, it was a way of the voters toexpressed incredulity to the current government.
