TBT staff and wire reports

Edgar Savisaar - the current mayor of Tallinn

The municipal elections in Estonia, which took place on the 18 of October, were won by The Centre Party, led by the current Tallinn mayor Edgar Savisaar. The party was able to gain 31,2% of the votes.

Centre Party's closest competitor - The Reform Party (which leader, Andrus Ansip, is currently the head of the Estonian government) - has managed to gain only half as many votes (16,8%). Third place was taken by Pro Patria and Res Publica Union (IRL) with 14,1% of the votes. The reformists and IRL are, right now, the ruling coalition in the Estonian parliament, and the Center fraction is oppositional.

In the capital the party of Edgar Savisaar was supported by the majority of the voters (53,3%). This secured them 44 seats of the total of 79 in the municipal assembly. The Centrist are already making plans of a coalition with the Social-Democratic party.

Edgar Savisaar himself, got 38 thousands 978 votes. It has been stated, that this result is record-breaking in the whole history of municipal and parliament elections in Estonia. In the comments about his victory, Savisaar mentioned, that, it was a way of the voters to expressed incredulity to the current government.
