Obama commemorates millenium

On the eve of Lithuania's millennium celebrations, Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus reiceived a letter of congratulations from U.S. President Barack Obama. 

 "This is an auspicious year for your nation. In addition tocommemorating the 1000th anniversary of the first written reference toLithuania, you are celebrating the selection of Vilnius as the EuropeanUnion's 2009 Capital of Culture. Both events reflect not onlyLithuania's long and rich history, but also the extraordinarytransformation your country has enjoyed since reaffirming its freedomnearly 20 years ago," Obama wrote.

"We lookforward to our continued partnership in promoting peace, democracy, andrespect for human rights worldwide. I applaud Lithuania and itsachievements, and send my best wishes as you and the Lithuanian peoplecelebrate an important milestone in your nation's history,"wrote Obama.
