The Eastern European interest in EU agricultural subsidy reform

At the end of the Czech EU presidency, Eastern European governments have tried to gain traction in the tug of war over agricultural subsidies from Brussels. The price justifies the effort – 55 billion euros annually are at stake. And the inequality in the distribution of subsidies is indeed striking. In 2013, spoilt Greek farmers will get three to four times as many payments per hectare as Latvian farmers on the bottom rung of the EU subsidy distribution.
