Siemens in make-over?

Jul 13, 2000

VILNIUS (BNS) - German electronics producer Siemens might take part in the restructuring of the Lithuanian energy market, but no concrete decisions have yet been made, Siemens' president, Heinrich von Pierer, said July 5.

"We could take part, but we assess that opportunity rather carefully, because our clients are actively involved in this sphere, and they may not like a new competitor," von Pierer said.

Pierer said if the possibility arises Siemens could take part in modernizing electrical power production plants and supply grids.

"However, concrete decisions on energy questions still need to be made. I believe our experience will play a crucial role here," von Pierer said.

He also underlined the necessity of joining the energy grids of the Baltic states with those of western Europe. He said Siemens might be able to give technical and even political support in implementing that goal.

Siemens is also planning to expand its automobile equipment plant in the Lithuanian port city of Klaipeda, to continue cooperation with Lietuvos Telekomas and hopes to begin implementation of several health protection programs in the near future.
