MPs slash own salaries

RIGA - The Latvian parliament has voted almost unanimously to slash their own salaries by some 15 percent.

Only one parliamentarian abstained from the vote on the proposed salaryreduction.

Under the amendments proposed by the parliament presidium and the councilof parliament factions, lawmakers' basic salaries will be slashed by 15percent. In line with the new provisions, each standing parliamentcommittee can set up no more than two sub-committees, and each MP can be amember of up to two sub-committees.

Presently, some MPs are working in as many as six sub-committees.

The 15 percent salary reduction means that the monthly gross salary ofLatvian MPs will go down to 1,047 lats (1,489 euros) from the previous 1,232lats. Calls to also cut compensations for representation, transport, rentand communications costs, however, were rejected.
