This morning, as with every morning since mid-January, I tie on a white ribbon 's as both a private act and a public statement. The white ribbon expresses my commitment to a better quality of democracy in Latvia. Hundreds of NGOs and individuals have appealed to the public in Latvia to eschew violent forms of political protest, and stand up for democratic values of freedom of speech and assembly and for public participation in civic life.
