NARVA - Four seperate fires over a 24 hour period have claimed the lives of five different people in Estonia.

The first of the fatalities occurred in the northeastern border city of Narva, where a woman died in her flat on the third floor of a nine-story apartment block as a result of careless smoking Wednesday morning. An elderly occupant of a neighboring apartment was hospitalized with smoke poisoning, spokespeople for the Rescue Board said.

In the southern Viljandi County a man died Wednesdayevening in a blaze that had engulfed a one-story house. Firecrews were called out at 6:30 p.m. and it was not immediately clear what had caused the fire.

Shortly afterwards fire crews were alerted to a blaze in a three-story apartment house in the eastern regional capital Jogeva. Firemen brought out the dead body of a man who apparently had started the fire by smoking in the bed.

A call was received shortly after midnight about a fire in a one-story house at Korgessaare on the western Hiiumaa island. The bodies of two men were found inside the building.
