Police protest low wages
RIGA - About 300 police officers have taken to the streets to protest a government decision to freeze public sector wages in 2009.Union representatives had previously predicted that the Saturday protest would draw thousands.
Latvian United Trade Union of Policemen Chairman Agris Suna told BNS that an explanation for the low participation in the campaign could be the fact that many policemen at weekends work in other jobs, mainly as security guards in companies.
Policemen from Kuldiga, Rezekne, Jekabpils, Ventspils and other Latvian cities came to the protest campaign, but the majority of the participants were from Riga. Many policemen arrived to the rally with their families and children.
Participants of the rally were carrying posters that read "We require human worthy wage," "A cop is a human being, too" and "Ice age for wages while prices are growing."
