Latvia gears up for Olympics
RIGA - The Latvian Olympic Committee has announced that at least 48 Latvian athletes will be making their way to Beijing this summer for the Olympic Games.The committee said that there may even be more than 48 athletes, as athletes in the track and field events can still qualify for a spot on the team until the end of July.
The committee also stated that it was unknown whether or not two of Latvia’s beach volleyball players, Inguna Minusa and Inese Jursone will take part in this years events.
The Latvian team includes: track and field athletes, swimmers, canoeists, cyclists, shooters, weightlifters, tennis players, volleyball players and of course, the famed women’s basketball team.
Two Latvian world champs are to participate, including Viktors Scerbatihs, also a member of parliament.
In addition to being the first time Latvia will have competed in a Summer Olympic team sport, Latvia will also send beach volleyballists and BMX bikers to Beijing for the games.
The 2008 Summer Olympics are to take place starting August 8 and will go until August 24.
