BRUSSELS -- Latest figures from Eurostat, the European Union's official statistics department reveal that unemployment levels fell in Estonia and Lithuania in May 2008 but rose in Latvia.

Seasonally-adjusted figures reveal that unemployent in Estonia is currently running at 4.1 percent, in Lithuania 4.3 percent and in Latvia 5.6 percent. The figures for April were 4.2, 4.4 and 5.5 percent respectively.

Denmark currently boasts the EU's lowest unemployment rate with just 2.7 percent of potential workers out of a job. In contrast, Slovakia has a serious problem with more than 1 in 10 of the workforce unemployed despite its rejuvenated industrial sector and hopes for an imminent adoption of the euro.
