Taking back the reigns
Voters in Latvia last week showed signs of taking back the democratic reigns. Approxi-mately 220,000 voters signed on to a constitutional reform initiative which will – if enacted – give the voters the possibility to dissolve parliament in a referendum procedure. Pent-up frustration with the political system has led a substantial number of individuals to vote for their own empowerment, for a constitutional innovation of direct democracy to dissolve a sitting Parliament.
