NATIONAL PASTIME: In addition to being the most popular sport in Latvia, ice hockey is also the game that the country is best known for internationally.

RIGA - When asked by my editor to do a piece on professional ice hockey in Latvia, I looked at my black-and-white junior high school pictures with nostalgia.
