Balts lead Europe yet again

RIGA - Amongst the huge volume of statistics produced about the Baltic states each week, some facts are clearly significant, others less so. And some are somewhat interesting, even if you don't quite know what to do with them.

That's the category to which we'll assign latest data from Eurostat which 'reveals' that of all the EU member states, the share of women working in the hotel and catering sector is highest in the Baltic states. Women account for 76 percent of employees in Estonia, 83 percent in Lithuania and 95 percent in Latvia.

Only in four member states are there fewer women than men working in hotels and restaurants: Malta (28 percent), Greece (44 percent), Italy and France (both 49 percent).

Quite what this proves we are not sure, other than that if you work in catering or hospitality in the Baltic, you are almost certainly a woman.

But at least Balts can again claim to be leading Europe in something or other.
